Social unrest has been on the rise for decades and is on the verge of becoming normalized. It has been occurring with such regularity that we are becoming almost tolerant of it. This normalization and tolerance of such “acting out” has become a hazard, a conditioned acceptance of misbehavior which becomes self-perpetuating. When this happens, we begin to believe that acting out solves problems. It certainly gains attention, but it rarely brings any conflicts to rest. It simply offers a temporary release, an ease to the inner pain that brought the unrest to the surface.
The only true solution to social unrest is to take the time to have an open, vulnerable, and in-depth exploratory exchange to get to the root of what is festering within. Only then, with compassion, honoring, and a genuine will to heal, will an actual resolution present itself. We can look to current and past trailblazers who have demonstrated how this can work. We can turn to Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Susan B. Anthony, and others. These individuals set the stage for change, bringing attention to inequality through acts of non-violence and getting to the heart of the unrest.
